The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), under its Research and Data Collection program (CFDA 15.808), awarded a 3-year $143,236 Cooperative Agreement to the Wildlife Management Institute (WMI), a nonprofit organization, to advance the development of a nationwide biodiversity data management system. The key objectives are to: 1) explore the interest and utility of a nationwide integrated database with regional associations and state agencies, 2) identify a potential host for any such regional and national databases, 3) examine data sharing issues with states and partners, and 4) explore potential improvements to existing regional databases for decision-support and conservation applications. The project will deliver written synthesis products, including a comparative analysis of existing regional database systems and a review paper on the creation, enhancement, and maintenance of biodiversity data management systems for state fish and wildlife agencies. The expected outcome is to contribute to the development of a state-led and nationally coordinated integrated biodiversity data management system to inform government and conservation decisions related to fish, wildlife, habitat, and natural resources.
