The Department of Energy (DOE) awarded a $5,878,673 Cooperative Agreement to the Santa Ynez Band of Mission Indians to establish and operate the Santa Ynez Chumash Oceanographic Institute. This institute will advance the socio-economic and cultural future of the Santa Ynez Chumash and other Chumash tribes by training and educating tribal members in ocean and coastal policy, science, and management. The project will increase the tribe's capacity to engage as co-managers and collaborators in the newly designated Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary, and establish an interdisciplinary education program to train tribal professionals to advise on offshore wind energy, transmission, and other coastal activities. This award is funded through the DOE's Grid Infrastructure Deployment and Resilience program (CFDA 81.254), which supports projects that enhance the reliability, resilience, and flexibility of the U.S. electric grid infrastructure.
