This Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) Renewable Energy Research and Development program (CFDA 81.087) will fund the creation of an Engineered Geothermal System (EGS) in more than 4 kilometers deep rock with temperatures at or above 425°C - known as "superhot rock" (SHR). The $30.17M award to Mazama Energy, Inc. will fund the drilling of a production well and the application of new stimulation methods to connect both new and naturally occurring fractures within the SHR reservoir located on the western flank of Oregon's Newberry Volcano. The goal is to develop an EGS system that can leverage the elevated energy densities of supercritical water in SHR to generate geothermal energy at significantly lower costs. The award period runs from October 1, 2024 to March 31, 2026.
