- The Department of Energy's Office of Science has awarded a $199,979 Project Grant to Ocean Renewable Power Co Inc. in Portland, Maine to develop "Embedded Instrumentation for Detection of Flow Separation." The funding, which runs from July 22, 2024 to July 21, 2025, supports the company's research and development of advanced instrumentation and technologies for detecting flow separation in marine energy systems. This work aligns with the Office of Science Financial Assistance Program...
- The Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy awarded a $335,000 Project Grant under the Renewable Energy Research and Development program (CFDA 81.087) to Oregon State University (OSU). The goal of this 3-year project is to (1) characterize and leverage two existing open-source wave energy conversion systems (WECs) for long-term use by the marine energy community; (2) demonstrate co-design informed pathways to improve power capture and reduce levelized cost of...
- This Cooperative Agreement award, valued at $249,991.00, was granted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS) program (CFDA 11.012) on March 1, 2024. The National Offshore Wind Research & Development Consortium (NOWRDC), in collaboration with Xodus Group and Karp Strategies, will establish the National Ocean Renewable Power Accelerator (Ocean RePoweR) program. Ocean RePoweR aims to create a national framework for...
- This $1,000,000 Project Grant award from the Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (CFDA 81.087 - Renewable Energy Research and Development) supports technology development and end-to-end laboratory testing and integration of open-source wave energy conversion systems (WECS) with a novel autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) docking and recharging system. The key technological developments include: (1) full system performance analysis of the WECS and AUV...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $305,000 STTR Phase I project grant under the NSF Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (CFDA 47.084) program to Sitkana Inc. The project aims to develop a modular tidal energy system for power generation in remote coastal communities. The key technical innovation is a novel power take-off system utilizing a drag-based shrouded rotor design to capture energy from tidal currents and provide reliable, affordable, and emission-free electricity...
- This Cooperative Agreement, awarded by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) under the Renewable Energy Research and Development program (CFDA 81.087), will provide $800,000 to Florida Atlantic University (FAU) to conduct a preliminary feasibility study for a U.S. grid-connected ocean current test facility (OCTF). The project aims to evaluate current energy converters (CECs) in the open ocean offshore Palm Beach County, Florida, in order to...
- The U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy awarded a $978,652 Cooperative Agreement under the Renewable Energy Research and Development program (CFDA 81.087) to Noria Energy Holdings LLC. The project seeks to demonstrate the potential for quickly and effectively hybridizing floating photovoltaics (FPV) with hydropower facilities across the United States using domestically produced equipment. Key project activities include site analyses, engineering design,...
ORCAS POWER & LIGHT COOPERATIVE (OPALCO) IS A MEMBER-OWNED, NON-PROFIT ENERGY COOPERATIVE THAT DISTRIBUTES ENERGY TO 20 ISLANDS IN THE SAN JUAN ISLANDS AND WILL SERVE AS THE PROJECT LEAD AND SITE DEVELOPER. THE OPALCO TIDAL ENERGY PROJECT IN THE ROSARIO STRAIT PLANS TO DEVELOP A PILOT DEMONSTRATION SITE AND INSTALL ONE 2 MW TIDAL POWER GENERATOR THAT MEETS CURRENT LOCAL, STATE, AND FEDERAL REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS. THE OVERALL OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO PERFORM THE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT (R & D) ACTIVITIES THAT ARE NEEDED TO DEMONSTRATE COMMERCIAL VIABILITY, ENABLING THE PILOT DEMONSTRATION SITE TO BE TRANSITIONED INTO A COMMERCIAL PROJECT THAT CONTINUES OPERATION AND PROVIDES OPPORTUNITIES FOR FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF THE DEMONSTRATION SITE INTO A LARGE (> 5 MW), GRID CONNECTED TIDAL ENERGY PROJECT. IN PHASE 1/ BP1, THE PROJECT TEAM WILL FULLY CHARACTERIZE THE SITE, WHICH WILL INVOLVE PHYSICAL AND DESK TOP DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS. R & D IN THIS PHASE IS TO INFORM AND UNDERSTAND THE INTERACTIONS BETWEEN THE ONSHORE, OFFSHORE ENVIRONMENT AND THE TECHNOLOGY, THEREBY IMPROVING CONFIDENCE IN THE LEVEL OF RISK ASSOCIATED WITH THESE INTERACTIONS. PLANS AND SCHEDULES WILL BE DEVELOPED FOR LICENSING AND ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING, SITE HEALTH AND SAFETY, STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT, COMMUNITY BENEFITS, SUPPLY CHAIN PROCUREMENT AND FINALLY TECHNOLOGY SELECTION AND QUALIFICATION. THIS PHASE WILL CULMINATE IN A FEDERAL ENERGY REGULATORY COMMISSION (FERC) DRAFT HYDROKINETIC LICENSE APPLICATION SUBMISSION. A COMPETITIVE DOWN-SELECT WILL BE HELD AT THE CONCLUSION OF PHASE 1/BP1 WHERE THE PROJECT TEAM WILL PRESENT THE PROJECT GOALS, PROGRESS, AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS TO-DATE TO THE WATER POWER TECHNOLOGIES OFFICE (WPTO). IF THIS PROJECT IS SELECTED, SUBSEQUENT PHASES WILL BE AS FOLLOWS: - PHASE 2: DETAILED SITE CHARACTERIZATION - PHASE 3: SITE MOBILIZATION - PHASE 4: SITE COMMISSIONING AND TECHNOLOGY FABRICATION - PHASE 5: TESTING AND OPERATIONS
