The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) awarded a $700,414 Cooperative Agreement under the Renewable Energy Research and Development (CFDA 81.087) program to the City of Duluth, Minnesota to design and deploy a geothermal heating and cooling system in the Lincoln Park neighborhood. The project objectives are to: 1) Design a new geothermal system to meet 100% of the heating demand in the underserved Lincoln Park community, and 2) Develop a career pathways plan to build the workforce needed for geothermal, district energy, heat pump, and building electrification projects. Under a $435,084 sub-award, the City has contracted with Ever-Green Energy, Inc. to provide analysis and design services for the geothermal heating system. This DOE-funded initiative supports the Biden Administration's goals to achieve carbon pollution-free electricity by 2035 and economy-wide net-zero emissions by 2050 through clean energy deployment and ensuring environmental justice for underserved communities.
