The U.S. Department of Energy's Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) has awarded a $1,120,000 Cooperative Agreement to the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) to develop a prototype 1 kWh rechargeable solid-state lithium-air battery (RSS-LAB) with a target gravimetric energy density of over 1,000 Wh/kg and volumetric energy density of over 1,000 Wh/L. The 3-year project is a multi-institutional collaboration between IIT, Argonne National Laboratory, and RTX Corporation (doing business as Raytheon Technologies Research Center). The goal is to produce a prototype RSS-LAB with a cycle life of 100 and a detailed design for a multi-MWh cell pack to support decarbonizing aviation. As a sub-awardee, RTX Corporation will design the 1 kWh energy storage system and model a 1 MWh system suitable for aviation applications.
