The University of North Texas was awarded a $2,211,342 cooperative agreement from the Department of Energy Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA-E) under the Advanced Research Projects Agency - Energy federal grant program (CFDA 81.135). The objective of the project titled "Electrochemical Processing of Nuclear Spent Fuel" is to develop a novel self-powered wireless differential pressure sensor for long-term, in situ, real-time monitoring of high-temperature molten salt density and level for safeguarding and monitoring of electrochemical processing of nuclear spent fuel.

Three subawards were provided under the cooperative agreement. General Electric Company (GE) will collaborate with the University of North Texas to develop a wireless pressure sensor for monitoring electrochemical processes of nuclear spent fuels, including designing a housing and developing a technology-to-market plan. The University of Michigan will develop a novel self-powered pressure sensor for long-term, in situ monitoring of high-temperature molten salt density and level during pyroprocessing of nuclear spent fuel. Northeastern University will focus on material characterization and microfabrication of aluminum nitride MEMS pressure sensors leveraging existing expertise in aluminum nitride thin film deposition.
