The Indian Health Service (IHS) awarded Oklahoma State University (OSU) a 5-year, $604,449 Cooperative Agreement under the Tribal Self-Governance Program (CFDA 93.210) to address mental health disparities in American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) communities through educational and recruitment programs. The project aims to increase the number of AIAN students entering professional psychology by providing scholarships, mentoring, and a 2-week summer enrichment program. Since the program's inception in 1997, 20-25% of OSU's incoming clinical psychology doctoral students have been AIAN, and 33 AIAN students have graduated with PhDs. Additionally, over half of the summer enrichment participants have been admitted to graduate programs nationwide, going on to serve in tribal, IHS, and federal mental health programs. The project will conduct outreach to school-aged and high school-aged AIAN youth as well.
