This National Science Foundation (NSF) Cooperative Agreement award under the NSF Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (CFDA 47.084) program provides $2,000,000 in funding from May 15, 2025 to April 30, 2028 to the University of Alabama. The project, titled "CONVERGENCE ACCELERATOR BIO-INSPIRED DESIGN INNOVATIONS: TENSEGRITY-BASED EXOSUITS THAT COMPLEMENT HUMAN BIOMECHANICS (TANDEM)", will advance the development of a "Second Spine" bioinspired passive back-support exosuit technology. Key deliverables include the Second Spine product, its digital twin, in-lab and in-field performance evaluations, exosuit adoption and safety best practices, an exosuit risk assessment tool, a supply chain management model, and policy and workforce outreach workshops. The project aims to enhance worker health, safety, and productivity by providing accessible and affordable exosuit technologies that can reduce occupational injuries while enabling greater workforce participation, particularly for aging workers. Subawards are planned under this cooperative agreement.
