- The National Science Foundation awarded a two-year, $497,247 Project Grant to the Regents of the University of Michigan under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to develop a Center Catalyst for the proposed Center for Land Surface Hazards. The Center Catalyst will work to establish a shared vision within the scientific community for innovative, interdisciplinary research on interconnected land-surface hazards such as landslides and floods. It will engage the geoscience research community...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation Division of Earth Sciences provides $497,132 to the Georgia Tech Research Corporation for the development of a Collaborative Center for Landslides and Ground Failure GeoHazards under the Geosciences federal grant program (CFDA 47.050). The Center will serve as a hub focused on researching the causes and triggers of landslides as well as developing forecasting tools. Specific products and services include developing cyberinfrastructure...
- This $162,243 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) supports collaborative research at the University of Central Florida (UCF) to advance predictive understanding of landscape evolution and erosional extremes under changing climatic conditions. The key objectives are to: (1) extract local geomorphic transport laws driving landscape evolution using large-scale experimental data and novel physics-informed artificial intelligence methods; (2)...
- This Project Grant award of $180,000 was issued by the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) to a researcher at Mount Pleasant, MI. The grant aims to develop methods for automatically detecting landslides and other erosion on former mountaintop removal coal mining sites in Central Appalachia. The project will leverage LiDAR data to observe erosion and deposition processes at a regional scale, train deep learning models for automated geomorphic mapping, and conduct...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) Office of International Science and Engineering (OISE) awarded a $614,333 Project Grant under CFDA 47.079 to the Regents of the University of Michigan to conduct the Climate Adaptation and Resilience Strategies (CLARS) project. The goal of CLARS is to develop community engagement tools, urban models, and decision support systems that help build resilience among migrants and host communities facing climate change impacts in the Lake Victoria Basin in Africa...
- This Project Grant award, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050), supports research to develop new technologies that integrate advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) with established geoscientific domain knowledge to enhance understanding of landslide causality. The $674,291 award, effective October 1, 2024 through September 30, 2027, will enable the Research Foundation of the City University of New York (RFCUNY) to:...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) provides $199,998 to Trustees of Dartmouth College to strengthen community resilience to river flood hazards in hilly and mountainous areas. The two-year project aims to: (1) build partnerships with local communities impacted by river floods, (2) co-develop critical research questions on flood erosion hazards and adaptation solutions, (3) develop a database of flood impacts and adaptation...
- This $1,838,806 project grant, awarded by the National Science Foundation's Engineering program (CFDA 47.041), supports research and information-sharing activities at the Natural Hazards Center. The project's objectives are to: (1) advance multidisciplinary hazards and disaster research to enhance societal resilience; (2) translate and disseminate research findings across institutions and organizations; (3) build connections between researchers, practitioners, and policymakers; and (4) support...
- This $1,244,153 Cooperative Agreement awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (CFDA 47.084) program supports the development of a novel flood forecasting system by Hyfi LLC, a minority-owned small disadvantaged business in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The project aims to enhance US flood preparedness through real-time monitoring and forecasting of flash floods, which are among the most destructive and costly natural disasters in the United...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) will provide $200,000 from January 1, 2025 to December 31, 2026 to Clemson University to build collaborations and capacity to address climate hazards in the Southeast U.S. The project will bring together stakeholders in South Carolina to coordinate efforts and increase resilience to Earth system hazards, such as heat stress, flooding, and pollutant exposures. It will facilitate meetings to engage...
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded a $6,000,000 Cooperative Agreement to the Regents of the University of Michigan to establish the Center for Land Surface Hazards (CLASH). The purpose of CLASH is to advance the understanding of land surface hazards, such as landslides, debris flows, river erosion, and flash flooding, and to develop new approaches to help communities better prepare for and recover from these events. The CLASH center will focus on how different natural hazards interact to create more severe and long-lasting disasters. Through partnerships with government agencies, local organizations, and the public, CLASH will share information and tools to help people prepare for hazard events and develop skills for future jobs in safety and disaster response. This award contributes to the NSF's role in the National Landslide Preparedness Act and will be executed over a 5-year period from October 1, 2025 to September 30, 2030. The CLASH project is funded under the NSF's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050).
