This $2,258,677 National Science Foundation (NSF) Cooperative Agreement award to the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences (CFDA 47.049) federal grant program will fund the development and testing of scalable vacuum beamtube technology for the planned Cosmic Explorer (CE) gravitational wave observatory. The project, known as the Cosmic Explorer Beamtube Experiment (CEBEX), will design, construct, and evaluate a 1.2-meter diameter by 120-meter long prototype ultrahigh-vacuum beamtube section to assess the feasibility, scalability, and compliance with requirements for the CE's much larger 40-kilometer laser interferometer. The results of this 4.25-year effort will provide a reference design, cost estimate, and schedule framework to support future CE construction efforts, advancing the broader goals of expanding gravitational wave observational science and enabling new studies of ultrahigh-vacuum environments. No subawards are planned under this grant.
