- This is a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase II contract awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to Rolling Hills Research Corporation, a for-profit manufacturer based in El Segundo, California. The $750,000 fixed-price contract is for the development of a self-contained, self-powered sensor array to detect laminar/turbulent transition, flow separation, and shock waves for both flight and ground testing. The system uses a novel mounting and...
THIS RESEARCH WILL FOCUS ON TRANSONIC WIND TUNNEL TURBULENCE MEASUREMENTS SPONSORED BY WIND TUNNEL CHARACTERIZATION WORKING GROUP (WTCWG). HOT WIRE ANEMOMETRY HAS BEEN THE TYPICAL MEASUREMENT TECHNIQUE FOR SUCH MEASUREMENTS. HOWEVER, THE TRANSONIC SENSOR SENSITIVITIES ARE NOT CHARACTERISTIC OF LOW SPEED OR SUPERSONIC ENVIRONMENTS. THE TRANSONIC MEASUREMENTS OF VELOCITY, DENSITY, TEMPERATURE, AND FLOW ANGLE THAT MAKE UP FREE STREAM TURBULENCE WILL REQUIRE SIMULTANEOUS AND INDEPENDENT MEASUREMENTS USING A FOUR CHANNEL ANEMOMETER SYSTEM.
