- This is a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract awarded by NASA to Opto-Knowledge Systems Inc. (Oksi), a small business based in Torrance, California. The contract value is $125,000.00 and the work focuses on developing a minimally invasive in-flight diagnostic system to measure heat shield recession during flight tests. The proposed concept involves using specially designed heat shield plugs with trace indicator materials and a remote spectral sensor to detect when each...
- This is a $124,988 firm fixed-price Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to Industrial Measurement Systems Inc. (IMS Inc.), a for-profit Subchapter S corporation located in Aurora, Illinois. The contract is for the development of an ultrasonic thermometry technique to precisely measure and provide real-time temperature feedback during the Thermal Stir Welding (TSW) process. TSW is a solid-state welding...
- This is a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase II contract awarded by NASA to Physical Sciences Inc. (PSI), a for-profit research and development company, for the development of a passive thermal control skin (TCS) technology. The TCS will control the infrared emissivity as a function of thermal load while maintaining low solar absorptivity, enabling improved temperature regulation for future manned and unmanned spacecraft missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond. The $749,923...
- This federal contract award from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) supports the development of a novel, non-invasive method to monitor the condition of thermal protection system (TPS) materials used on spacecraft during reentry. The contract, valued at $120,735.00, was awarded to Jentek Sensors, Inc., a small business manufacturer of specialized sensor technologies, under the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. The proposed solution incorporates innovative...
- This is a SBIR Phase I contract awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to Metrolaser, Incorporated, a small business, for the development of a suite of laser-based diagnostics to measure velocity and temperature simultaneously in high enthalpy flows relevant to reentry flight. The $124,955 firm-fixed-price contract covers the first phase of the project, which aims to determine the best technique for measuring in highly dissociated regions near the stagnation point,...
- Laser Thermal Analysis, Inc., a small business based in Charlottesville, Virginia, was awarded a $1.75M Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase II contract by the Air Force Research Laboratory on September 26, 2025, to develop large-area high-throughput thermal inspection capabilities for complex electronics. This Total Small Business set-aside contract, structured as a firm fixed-price purchase order, will be performed in Charlottesville, Virginia, with an expected completion date of...
- This is a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program Phase I contract awarded to Combustion Research & Flow Technology Inc. (doing business as Craft-Tech), a small business specializing in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) services. The $150,000 firm-fixed-price contract was awarded by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) for the purpose of "MULTIPHYSICS MODELING OF THE ABLATION PROCESS FOR THERMAL PROTECTION SYSTEMS". As a Phase I SBIR contract, this award is focused...
- This $124,983 Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program contract was awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Shared Services Center to Industrial Measurement Systems Inc., a for-profit Subchapter S Corporation. The contract addresses NASA's needs for advanced manufacturing, structures, and materials technologies under Technical Area TA12. Specifically, it aims to adapt ultrasonic thermometry methods to enable real-time temperature measurements during...
- This is a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract awarded by the Department of the Air Force Materiel Command Research Laboratory to Physical Sciences Inc., a for-profit research and development company, for $149,970.00. The contract is for research and development of a combined low coherence interferometry/Raman spectroscopy system to enable non-destructive characterization of high-temperature composite surfaces and coatings. As a Phase I SBIR award, this contract provides...
- Physical Sciences Inc., a small business research and development firm based in Andover, Massachusetts, has been awarded a Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract by the Air Force Research Laboratory for the development of a heat-pipe-based static pressure probe designed for high-enthalpy flow facilities. The total contract value is $1.8 million with a firm fixed price structure and an ultimate completion date of September 30, 2027. This award, designated as a total small...
- THE PHASE I PROGRAM DEMONSTRATED THE EFFICACY OF REAL-TIME OF ULTRASONIC RECESSION MEASUREMENTS ON LOW DENSITY TPS MATERIALS. MEASUREMENTS ON INTERNAL ECHOES ESTABLISHED THE FEASIBILITY OF NON-INTRUSIVE TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENTS. IN THE PHASE II PROGRAM WE WILL CONTINUE TO IMPROVE, OPTIMIZE, AND EXTEND THE TECHNOLOGY. SENSORS WITH BETTER ELEVATED TEMPERATURE PERFORMANCE WILL BE DEVELOPED AND CONFIGURED FOR ABLATION MEASUREMENTS. INSTRUMENTATION WITH IMPROVED LOW FREQUENCY AND MORE ROBUST TIME-OF FLIGHT ALGORITHMS WILL BE INCORPORATED INTO THE SYSTEM. CONFIGURATIONS WITH MULTIPLE SENSORS SUITABLE FOR MAPPING RECESSION PROFILES WILL BE EVALUATED. THE MEASUREMENT TECHNIQUE WILL BE APPLIED AND MEASUREMENT RESULTS VERIFIED THROUGH A SERIES OF ABLATION TESTS WHERE THE REAL-TIME RECESSION DATA WILL BE QUANTITATIVELY COMPARED TO THAT OBTAINED FROM POST-ABLATION ANALYSIS.
