This is a cooperative agreement between the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) and the University of Maryland at College Park (UMD) to carry out collaborative research in Earth system science. The agreement, valued at $55,165,125.66 over five years, is intended to increase the effectiveness of research and teaching through close collaboration and serve as a means to train personnel for careers in Earth system science. Major focus areas include climate change, severe weather, the atmosphere, oceans, sea ice, glaciers, and the land surface. The agreement does not have a set-aside designation. UMD, a state-controlled institution of higher learning, will participate in the educational mission by advising graduate students in addition to conducting joint research. This builds upon a long-standing partnership between GSFC and UMD's Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC) to advance NASA's Earth science research goals.
