- This federal contract award to Northern Arizona University (NAU) is for a research project focused on conducting a ground-based telescopic survey to search for a hypothesized distant massive planet in our solar system. The $536,220.47 grant is being funded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) under its Planetary Astronomy (PAST) program. The research aims to either discover this hypothesized planet or rule out its existence through a multi-pronged approach involving...
- This federal contract award (80NSSC18K0349) was made by NASA to Northern Arizona University (NAU) to conduct research on exoplanets and their atmospheres. The $472,252 grant supports the development of climate models and spectral databases to help distinguish between "super-Earth" terrestrial planets and "mini-Neptune" gas-rich planets, which are common in exoplanet systems. This work aims to improve NASA's ability to characterize exoplanet atmospheres through future...
- Northern Arizona University received a $500,368 grant award (21-PDART21-0048) from NASA to improve thermal model capability for the planetary science community. The award, with an ultimate completion date of November 30, 2026, supports research activities to be conducted at NAU's Flagstaff, Arizona campus. This grant falls under NASA's Planetary Science Division Research and Analysis (PDART) program, which funds investigations that enhance the scientific return from planetary missions and...
- Northern Arizona University (NAU), a public research institution in Flagstaff, Arizona, received a $578,773 research grant from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to investigate compositional, thermophysical, and original variabilities of ancient volcanic materials on Mars. This award, made on September 1, 2024, with an ultimate completion date of August 31, 2027, supports planetary science research aligned with NASA's Science Mission Directorate priorities. The grant is...
- This is a $100,000.00 grant awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to Northern Arizona University (NAU) for planetary science research. The grant, which has no set-aside designation, supports the analysis of spectral data from asteroids and the modeling of thermal properties of celestial bodies. As a public research university, NAU has a strong track record of conducting scientific research and providing technical assistance to federal agencies across various...
- This is a $128,497.36 grant awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to Northern Arizona University (NAU) to offer a workshop in planetary geologic mapping in Flagstaff, Arizona. The grant, which has an ultimate completion date of August 31, 2023, does not have a set-aside designation. As a public research university, NAU has a long history of supporting federal agencies through contract and grant awards, particularly in areas such as planetary science research,...
- The U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) awarded a $749,582.00 grant to the Arizona Science Center, in collaboration with Arizona State University, Museum of Science, Science Museum of Minnesota, and the National Informal STEM Education Network (NISE Net), for a three-year project titled "Moon and Beyond: An Immersive Game for STEM Learning in Museums and Planetariums." The project aims to engage public audiences, particularly families with children in grades 4-8...
- This federal contract award to Northern Arizona University (NAU) from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) aims to characterize the variability in thermophysical properties of Mars analog deposits on Earth. The $124,639.97 training grant will allow NAU to generate new tools for investigating alteration and reworking in mafic sedimentary deposits on Mars and Earth, improve understanding of these geologic features, and further knowledge of past surface conditions on Mars,...
- This is a $150,000.00 training grant award from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to Northern Arizona University (NAU) for a project titled "Investigating Spectral Slopes in the Polana-Eulalia Complex: Space Weathering Trends and Observations of Sub-KM Members." The award supports scientific research related to planetary science and space weathering. NAU, a public research university serving as both a Hispanic-Serving Institution and a Native American-serving...
- This is a $848,013.00 grant award from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to Northern Arizona University (NAU) for the "MIT-HAWAII NEAR EARTH OBJECT SPECTROSCOPIC SURVEY" research project. The grant does not have a set-aside designation. NAU is a public research university in Flagstaff, Arizona that serves as both a Hispanic Serving Institution and Native American-serving nontribal institution. Through this award, NAU will conduct planetary science research,...
Northern Arizona University was awarded a $7.67 million cooperative agreement by NASA on January 4, 2016, for the PLANETS (Planetary Learning That Advances the Nexus of Engineering, Technology, and Science) project. This innovative collaborative initiative was developed through a partnership involving Northern Arizona University's Center for Science Teaching and Learning, the USGS Astrogeology Science Center, the Museum of Science Boston, and out-of-school time (OST) networks. The project aims to develop three OST modules that integrate planetary science with technology and engineering education, delivering current and engaging planetary science content to students and educators through science and engineering activities. No set-aside designation was used for this award. The PLANETS project pursues four primary objectives: establishing an interdisciplinary partnership between planetary subject matter experts, OST curriculum developers, and professional development specialists; developing nationally available curricular units and ancillary materials for OST contexts that incorporate NASA's Planetary Science Mission Directorate assets; creating professional development products for self-directed educator learning; and widely disseminating curricular and professional development materials with particular attention to reaching underrepresented populations in STEM. The cooperative agreement, set to conclude on December 31, 2026, will increase public awareness and use of NASA resources by highlighting the synergistic relationship between science, technology, and engineering in planetary science missions while building evidence of learning outcomes among students and educators.
